Thank you for your recent letter which confirms that you meet all the legal requirements for selling tobacco.

It is undoubtedly helpful that your 300 pharmacies offer a stop smoking service and that, in partnership with the Department of Health, you promote and distribute ‘Quit Kits’.

For your information, about 2 smokers out of every 100 succeed in permanently quitting smoking because nicotine is such an addictive drug. (1)

I am sorry to say I think these statements are more about salving the conscience of Tesco, rather than making a significant impact on reducing the numbers of your customers who smoke.

Your activities are not so much a matter of rearranging the deckchairs on the Titanic, as dusting some of the dust off one of the deckchairs.

To really make an impact, Tesco should stop selling tobacco products.
